Message from National Director

What a crazy year it's been. First, thank you to everyone for your patience as things have been a bit of a struggle this past year. Our membership process went offline, our website encountered numerous difficulties, our program development came to a complete stall, and I have not been available to lead this organization due to personal health issues.

While these sound discouraging, please understand that every organization encounters struggles similar to these, and only becomes stronger while overcoming them. Now that my health is hopefully becoming more stable, I will again be focusing my efforts on improving NAFP. We will be implementing an operational forums section for our members to interact, a vendors section for our members to take advantage of great discounts, and providing a monthly newsletter of new issues for women in EMS.

We will also be exploring the possibility of changing the organization's name to something more appropriate. Our current name is misleading, since it seems to exclude EMT's that are not paramedics. However, we encourage any woman provider in EMS to apply for membership. Another issue with our name is the use of the word "female." While we are all female, it is considered a sexist term in some circles, and does not give us credit for being strong, mature, intelligent individuals. It merely identifies us by gender alone. Therefore, we will be looking for a name that uses the word "women" instead. If you have a suggestion, please e-mail it to me directly. This is a huge move for the organization as we will be risking alienating some members who prefer the "female" identifier, as well as possibly affecting our branding image. Despite these risks, I believe we should do the right things for the right reasons. This would translate into naming ourselves something that identifies us for all of our great qualities instead of just one.

As always, be safe out there!

- Members only area where you will be able to network with other EMT's and Paramedics in a secure environment

- Forums section to share ideas, ask questions, and challenge each other to think outside the box

- Education section on where, how, and when to find educational opportunities. Also, to take the guesswork out of Training Officer credentialing and meeting regulations to obtain or renew teaching certificates. This section will also someday feature online CEU opportunities.

- Resource section to help you find needed material and equipment to meet your job and career development demands

- Classifieds section to sell, trade, or donate items or services related to EMS
